Washington Pilots Association
Pleads for Airport's Survival...
October 12, 2006
To the Eatonville Town Council:
I am writing on behalf of the
Washington Pilots Association about the proposed housing
development on land surrounding Swanson Field that you will be
considering at a public hearing on October 16.
The Washington Pilots Association has over one thousand members
and has been working on behalf of general aviation in
Washington since 1960.
It is my understanding that
the proposed housing development does not ensure prospective
resident's access to the runway and therefore, is not
consistent with the Eatonville Comprehensive Plan and Eatonville's
airport district zoning laws. A "non-aviation"
residential development on land surrounding Swanson Field
would not only flout Eatonville's existing zoning laws, it would
also be a hazard to airport operations and safety.
Swanson Field is an essential
public facility and an important transportation asset that
provides an onramp to the state and national air transportation
system. Therefore, it is critical that the Eatonville Town
Council not approve an incompatible housing development that
makes it difficult for Swanson Field to operate and that could
ultimately threaten its existence.
Incompatible land use around airports is
the primary reason why community airports are closing around the
nation. Don't let this happen at Eatonville! Please
protect Swanson Field and vote against any proposed housing
development that doesn't ensure runway access, is not
consistent with the Eatonville Comprehensive Plan and airport
district zoning laws and impedes airport operations.
Respectfully submitted,
