Campbell I-747
Letter to Governor Gregoire...
November
19, 2007
Governor
Christine Gregoire
Capitol Campus
Dear
Governor Gregoire:
I
appreciate your recent comments regarding I-747, and would appreciate your
consideration to call a ‘special session’ as quickly as
possible to protect the property rights of Washington citizens.
With
the legislature in Olympia Nov 28-30 for committee assembly, it would be
good timing to get this passed into law to preclude local
taxing districts across the state from pushing through a variety of
property tax increases before the January 2008 session can begin.
We
are seeing some positive response from a few counties that have indicated
they will honor your request that they not raise property taxes in
light of the outcome. But, we have to be wary of other counties who have
indicated they will try to sneak in tax increases while the issue is still
being considered by the Legislature. Waiting until January could be too
late, if taxing districts move forward.
I
look forward to working with my colleagues in the Legislature and with you
to resolve this perplexing problem for the good of all Washington
taxpayers. We need to reinstate the voter-approved initiative that the
State Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional by a 5-4 vote.
Respectfully,
Tom
