The Lions Club/American Legion Hall pulsed with laughter and merriment October 11 as friends and family of Dave and JoAnne Williams packed the hall to celebrate Dave's 80 years. Dave and JoAnne have been married over 53 years. Both graduated from Eatonville High School as did their three kids; Diane, Michael and John.
In 1939 Dave began working for Dan Christensen and Mashell Telephone Company part-time, and graduated in 1941. A member of "The Greatest Generation," Dave joined the Navy and became one of the 325,000 Seabees who fought and built on six continents and over 300 islands during World War II. Dave served from January 1943 until June 1946, "building dry docks" in the Pacific. Dave fell in love with the exotic locales and has returned many times to the lands of palms and orchids with JoAnne. Note the orchid lei he's wearing in the photo.
Dave's birthday party was a labor of love planned by his family and friends.  JoAnne fell several weeks before and broke her femur. She is recuperating nicely from surgery to repair the bone with a metal rod. She looks great as you can see in the photo above. The couple are watching Dave Hickman do his magic act for the party goers. Dave and Cindy Hickman catered the affair. On the menu was prime rib to die for (if you aren't a vegetarian that is), all the food was absolutely delicious.
John and Tammi Bratholm took care of the spirits. They have The Pizza Place in town, where the food is also absolutely delicious. Dave and JoAnne's longtime neighbor, Hazel McCarty, and Diane decorated the hall in harvest colors. Mike, his wife Monica and their son Brandon put together a touching and funny slide show. Dave got a big kick out of one cake which had his picture across the top. He hadn't seen that done before. The cake was from John and Vicki.
Dave and JoAnne have nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Dave has served the community by sitting on the town council for 12 years. His son, Mike, is serving the town today as a member of the Eatonville Planning Commission. Dave has been an active member of the Lions Club for many decades. He worked for Pacific Northwest Bell and worked part-time at Mashell Telephone Company, now Rainier Group. After retiring from Bell in 1969, Dave began working full-time at the phone company. There he stayed until December 31, 1994.
He has been a very active member of Sound Credit Union (Formerly Tacoma Telco) where he is one of the ten board members.
There is always a warm feeling when family and old friends get together for a happy occasion. There is lots of laughing, hugging and love in the room when that happens. Dave said, "I thought it was super! I think everyone had fun." He's right on!
