Earth Day - Every Day
Our Home Planet and Moon... Senator and former Governor of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, was the founder of Earth Day. The first Earth Day was observed April 22, 1970. Nelson announced his idea at a conference in Seattle in September 1969. According to his "History of Earth Day," Nelson announced that in the "spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast." And Earth Day was born.Thirty-eight years later more and more people, countries and cultures participate in attempting to save endangered planet Earth. Yet, Conservation International estimates that "every 20 minutes another species is pushed to extinction." These species include large and small mammals, plant species, fish, insects, birds etc. "Unfortunately in the past three decades not enough has changed. We are losing trees and forests at an alarming rate...Fewer trees means more endangered species. Poor air quality. Climate change and more," Conservation International warns. Sobering Facts... In 2007 the Ocean Conservancy released a report regarding Coastal Cleanup and the perilous impact of ocean trash which pollutes the water killing "more than one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles each year through ingestion and entanglement." Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) states over 6 million people around the world have picked up and removed "some 116 million pounds of trash" from beach cleanups. A 2000 U. N. study estimates 46,000 floating pieces of plastic per square mile of ocean.
The average American contributes 1,859 pounds of air pollution
to the atmosphere annually.
Running a refrigerator and freezer for one year can produce as much pollution as driving a car from Chicago to Las Vegas. Every minute 37,000 empty soft drink bottles are thrown away in America. Example of how long it takes garbage to break down: plastics take 500 years; aluminum cans take 500 years; organic materials take 6 months; cotton, rags, and paper take 6 months.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 75
percent of what Americans throw in the trash
could
actually be recycled. Currently, only 25 percent is.
Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one job; landfilling
10,000 tons of waste creates six jobs; recycling
10,000 tons of waste creates 36 jobs.
According to the April 7,
2008 issue of Time Magazine former President Bill Clinton
added 521 species to the
endangered species list during two terms as president.
George H. W. Bush added 231 species in his one term and
the current President Bush has added 59 species in seven
years. Wildearth Guardians has filed a lawsuit to add 681
species at once.
