EMS Varsity Football Has 5-1 Season

       by Donny O’Brien

The EMS 8th grade Varsity Football team posted four league wins with one loss and one non-league win over Orting. The lone league loss to Orting, 14 to 12, in the final game was the only smudge on a near perfect record. Assistant Coach Bill Guertner said about the team, "Great kids! They worked hard all season."

The players picked awards after the season was finished. Ben Tugend was chosen the team’s Most Valuable Player. This year’s Most Inspirational Player Award went to Travis Slaton. Voted Most Improved by the team was Chris Noone. EMS coaches pick two Coaches’ Awards. This year they went to Jeremy Osborn and Austin Stringhkam. The team’s leading rusher and most touchdowns award winner was Ben Tugend. Defensive Leader award went to Travis Slaton.

Guertner had this to say about the Warriors' quarterback, "Osborn is an excellent middle school QB. He throws the ball well, is good at picking up the second receiver and stays in the pocket.” The 7th grade team posted five wins and one loss. Their lone loss came in the last game of the season to Showalter, 13-8. Coach Guertner stated the seventh grade team had a, "Huge turnout. Over 30 players.  No one quit during the season. Many had never played football before. As with the 8th grade, kids worked hard all season and played extremely well. We were by far the smallest team in the league, but not the smallest heart. The kids are smart and very easy to coach."

Awards picked by the seventh grade team were: MVP -  Ethan Brandt, Most Inspirational - Andrew Benton, Most Improved - Jordan Lee. The two Coaches’ Awards, one picked by each coach, were to Cody Madison and Justin Erickson. The team’s leading rusher, with the most touchdowns, was Tyler Haifley. Leaders on defense were Ethan Brandt and Justin Erickson. “We had some great kids to work with [this year]," added Guertner.

Congratulations to the 2002 EMS Warriors football teams!

"Pity the poor kids who grow up in a big city. They miss the little things that made growing up in a small town, ah, so wonderful."
