Team's 12 Game Winning Streak Locks up Nisqually League Title
by
Donny O’Brien
The
Eatonville High School Girls soccer team has improved their record to
12-0-1 on the season with an 11-0 league record. Wins over Vashon on the
17th and Steilacoom on the 22nd Clinched the Nisqually League Title. The
Cruisers continued to find the net once again against the Vashon Pirates. Anna
Benton scored the Cruisers first goal in the match in the 28th minute with
an assist from Jenny Baker. Cruiser fans would have to wait until the 60th
minute to see their team score again against a tough Pirate team.
The second goal of the match was netted by Katelyn Goetze on a pass
from defender, Annie Nelson. EHS goalie Rachel Hunter and her defensive crew
of Nelson, Tara Foust, Jennifer Song, Angie Hall, and Bailey Snyder earned
their 7th shutout of the season against the Pirates in this 2-0 home win.
Against
the Steilacoom Sentinels the Cruisers clinched first place in the
Nisqually League. The win expanded the team’s unbeaten streak to 12, the
longest of any (Boys or Girls) Eatonville High School soccer team. Megan
Hecht started the scoring in 3rd minute with an assist by Jenny Baker. Seven
minutes it would be Hecht assisting Baker for the Cruisers second goal of
the match. The Cruiser defense did not allow one shot on goal in the first
half.
Steilacoom scored 13
minutes into the second half. Eatonville's Katelyn Goetze answered with
a goal off a rebounded shot by Baker. Baker finished off the scoring with a
"Bomb" from outside the penalty area in the fifty-seventh minute.
Jena Olson had the assist on Bakers final goal of the match. Thursday's game
is senior recognition, since it is the final home game of the season. The
varsity plays at 3:30 p. m. against Orting.

21-34 Win Over Bulldogs
Cruisers in 2nd Place With Orting
by Donny O'Brien
Two quick Cruiser touchdowns put the Bulldogs in the hole early in the first quarter. Foster, celebrating their homecoming, would answer on the second play following Eatonville's second score with an 80-yard run from scrimmage. Foster's score slowed the Cruiser momentum enough to keep this game from being a blowout. 18 yards separated the two teams offensively at the end of the game.
Devin O'Rourke racked up 205 yards in 35 carries and two touchdowns for the Cruisers. David Hamilton added another 84 in four carries with one rushing touchdown, Hamilton, along with O'Rourke, lead the Eatonville ground game. Foster with only 139 yards on the ground put the ball in the air 39 times with 19 completions for 213 yards and one touchdown. Eatonville's Kyle Mettler completed 4 of 11 passes for 39 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown toss to Hamilton.
Eatonville's defense were on their toes throughout the night forcing four big turnovers. Jon Culliton who had two interceptions for the night made a huge defensive play when he picked off a Foster pass and ran it back 30 yards for the score in the third quarter. Ian O'Brien caused two fumbles, recovered one and had a late fourth quarter interception. Russell Reece led the team with seven primary tackles, two sacks and two assists.
Cruiser fans in the stands were anxiously checking in on the Orting, Steilacoom game by cell phone. News traveled quickly throughout the stands when the Sentinels defeated the Cardinals. An Orting loss puts the Cruisers in a unique position. Win the next three games in a row Klahowya, Orting, Chimmacum and go to the playoffs. Or lose a game, and because the league takes only the top two teams to district this year, their season is over.
The Cruisers face Klahowya this Friday night at Eatonville. This game should be a good one. Klahowya has a passing attack and decent run game. The Cruisers are celebrating Homecoming and need a big win to give them momentum going into the Orting game the following week at Orting. If you're a fan of Cruiser football the next two weeks are must see games. Come support the team at home this Friday night Kick off is at 7 p. m.
