Cruisers
drop a big one to the Eagles

The Cruisers lost a big Nisqually league game last
Friday night 20-33, against the Klahowya Eagles. The loss put Eatonville in
a tie for third place in the league with Klahowya at 5-2 on the season. A
win this Friday against 6-1, Orting could create a three way tie for second
place in the league. That would possibly force a playoff for second place in
the Nisqually league. Lose to Orting and the Cruisers will finish their
season the following week at Chimacum.
It was Homecoming and the Cruisers looked up to the
task at hand. Klahowya had been a tough opponent for both league leaders
Steilacoom and Orting, but at 4-2 they trailed the Cruisers in the league
standings. The Cruisers needed a big win to carry momentum into the Orting
game the following week. It just wasn't in the cards this night. After a
scoreless first quarter Klahowya's Rory Lee intercepted a Kyle Mettler pitch
in the Cruiser backfield and ran it 58 yards for the first score of the
game. The PAT gave the Eagles a 0-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Capitalizing on a fumble recovery on the ensuing
kickoff Klahowya quickly moved the ball to the Eatonville four yard line
where Shawn Squires punched it in. The PAT kick failed. The Cruisers got
rolling offensively late in the quarter moving the ball to the Eagle eight
yard line.
From there Cruiser quarterback Kyle Mettler
bootlegged to the left and scored his first of three touchdowns on the
ground of the night. On the last play of the first half Jared Ottmar, Eagles
quarterback, was injured and would not play in the second half at all.
Playing with their second string quarterback Klahowya went to their run game
almost exclusively putting up 13 third quarter and seven, fourth quarter
points.
Mettler scored from the three in the third and the
one in the fourth. Eatonville runningback Devin O'Rourke, had 136 yards
rushing in 25 carries. It was the first game this season O'Rourke didn't
score.
The Cruisers will play the Orting Cardinals this
Friday night at Orting High School. The game begins at 7 p.m.
Junior
Cruisers lose to Lakewood
by Donny O'Brien
The Junior Cruisers took it on the chin last
Saturday against the Lakewood Purple team. Eatonville dropped this one 18-0
but, the game was much closer than the score indicated. An Eatonville fumble
on the opening play from scrimmage was scooped up and run back 35 yards for
a Lakewood touchdown. Later in the first quarter Lakewood would intercept a
Junior Cruiser pass and return it to the one yardline. It would take four
downs for the Purple team to break the goal giving them a 12-0 first half
lead.
For the next three quarters the Junior Cruiser
defense would hold the line and not give up a point. Having notable
defensive games for the Cruisers were Brad Norman, JD Olson, Jeremy Leonard,
Robbie Phibbs, Matt Van Eaton, Eric West, Steven Hass, Joey Patterson, and
Levi Smith.
The Eatonville offense moved the ball, but had
trouble with turnovers. Lakewood also put a lot of pressure on the Junior
Cruiser quarterbacks forcing them out of the pocket and causing several
rushed passes. On the final play of the game Lakewood intercepted a Junior
Cruiser pass and ran it back for the final score of the game. For the sixth
straight week the Junior Cruiser defense allowed just one touchdown to be
scored on them.
The Junior Cruisers, who are presently in 4th place
in the LYAA league, will face the Purple team again this Saturday night at
Harry Lang Stadium at 9 p.m. in the first round of the league's Championship
playoffs. A win will put Eatonville in the Championship game the following
day. A loss would put them in the third/forth place game. Times to be
announced.

Girls Soccer Final Home Game One to Remember
by Donny
O’Brien
Saving their
best game of the season for their final home game of their careers,
Eatonville's seniors Carah Carlman, Tara Foust, Rachel Hunter, Anna Benton,
Katelyn Goetze, and Catherine Shin (injured) shut-out Orting 5-0.
Hunter at goal has allowed just seven goals and has seven shutouts
for the season. Foust started the Eatonville scoring coming from her sweeper
position in the 26th minute with an assist from freshman Jenny Baker. Baker
would get her first of three goals six minutes later on a loose ball in the
penalty box. Anna Benton finished the first half scoring in the 35th
minute on a pass from Carlman.
With a comfy
three point lead the Nisqually League Champions were not finished with the
Cardinals. Five minutes into the second half Baker received a crossed ball
from Megan Hecht on the top of the penalty area and drove it through the
keeper’s hands. Baker did nearly the same thing five minutes later from
ten yards further out to finish the Cruiser scoring for the match.
EHS Coach Rollie Arthur said, “Every girl who played in this
match had an extraordinary game. Congratulations on a great home finish seniors!"
