Cruisers Air Attack Sinks Pirates
by Donny O'Brien

The Eatonville High School Cruisers put 21 points on the board in the first three minutes of the game as they rolled to a 42-14, Nisqually League victory over the Vashon High School Pirates.
The Cruisers defense swarmed the Pirates quarterback causing a fumble on the first play from scrimmage. Eatonville's Jay Iverson alertly scooped up the ball and raced 36 yards to put the Cruisers ahead with just 12 seconds off the clock. David Hamilton added the PAT kick.
The EHS defense went back to work holding Vashon on three downs forcing the Pirates to punt. The Vashon punter fumbled the snap and Eatonville recovered. Devin O'Rourke capped a short three play drive powering his way in from the 2 yard line. Hamilton's kick was good. O'Rourke would finish the game with 105 yards rushing on the night.
On the next Eatonville possession the Cruisers went to the air. EHS quarterback Kyle Mettler threw a 24 yard strike to Ian O'Brien for the third Cruiser touch down. Hamilton's kick was good.
In the second quarter the Cruiser aerial attack overwhelmed the Pirates. A few plays after a long shot down the middle to O'Brien was called back for illegal motion Mettler found Hamilton in the seam. Hamilton blew by the Vashon defenders for a 25 yard score. Hamilton's kick was good. Late in the quarter Mettler hooked up with O'Brien again on a 44 yard third down pass that gave the Senior quarterback his third touch down toss of the night. Hamilton's kick was good. After a hard nosed defensive goal line stand in the final seconds of the quarter, EHS took a commanding 35-0 lead into half time.
On the opening drive of the second half with Jordan Osborn at quarterback Eatonville moved the ball using short passes and runs to the VHS five yard line. Osborn capped the drive with a short pass to O'Brien in the end zone. Hamilton's kick was good. O'Brien finished the night with 73 yards and three touchdowns.
With a 42-0 lead the Cruiser coaching staff wisely began moving players in and out to get everyone valuable game experience. The Pirates would score twice in the fourth quarter but, this game was never very close. Outstanding team defensive play marked by some great individual efforts kept the game scoreless for three quarters. Russell Reece, and Iverson both had fumble recoveries as well as sacks or tackles for losses. O'Rourke had a sack and caused a fumble. Also, having notable defensive games for the Cruisers were Jon Culliton, David Body, Hamilton, Mettler and O'Brien.

by Donny O'Brien

The Junior Cruisers dropped a heartbreaker to the Bethel Braves Saturday the 14th. A defensive battle was waged throughout the entire game by the two evenly matched teams. Late in the second quarter Bethel found pay dirt on a 25 yard pass play. The Braves only score of the day proved to be the winning margin.
The Junior Cruisers fought back in the second half. Eatonville appeared to tie the game when Aaron Edwards broke loose and rambled 47 yards. The run however was unfortunately called back by a clipping call. The Junior  Cruisers were unable to score in the final minutes and the Braves took home their first win of the season.

High School Jamboree

by Donny O'Brien

After two full weeks of practice the Eatonville High School Cruisers football team traveled to Yelm to test themselves in a live scrimmage at the Yelm High School Jamboree. After a thunder, lightning and drenching late summer rain squall roared threw town delaying the contest about a half an hour both Varsity and JV teams played two series of ten down offense and defense. The Varsity team played teams from River Ridge and the Yelm Tornados.
EHS quarterbacks Kyle Mettler and Jordan Osborn took five snaps each during each series. Against River Ridge EHS matched up well. The Cruisers' offense and defense played RRHS tough in this scoreless series. Osborn completed two passes to Ian O'Brien. to Against Yelm the the Cruiser defense held fast again. Jay Iverson and Russell Reece both had strong defensive performances in each contests. The Cruiser offense looked sharp against the Tornados. Mettler completed his first pass of the night to David Hamilton. Five plays into the Yelm series Mettler went deep and found O'Brien in the end zone for the first Cruiser score of the night.   A few plays later Osborn hooked up with O'Brien again from about 30 yards out with a shot up the middle for the second Cruiser score of the night. The Cruiser ground game looked promising as well. Devin O'Rourke had a few nice carries in each series.
The Cruisers open their 2002 season this Friday night September 13th, at home against the Vashon Pirates. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM.

Junior Cruisers Sweep Competition

by Donny O'Brien

Eatonville's Junior Cruisers got their season rolling with a solid performance in the LLYA League Jamboree held Saturday August 24, at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood. The Junior Cruisers played three teams, the Lumberjacks, Hurricanes and the Crusaders out scoring all three opponents during each half of play. Against the Lakewood Lumberjacks the Junior Cruisers found themselves in a defensive battle that went scoreless for the first 15 minutes of play. Steven Haas put the Junior Cruisers on the board with a 37 yard romp around the right tackle. The extra point run was good. The Eatonville defense held the Lumberjacks scoreless to take the first scrimmage of the day 0-7.

The Junior Cruisers played the Olympia Hurricanes next. The Junior Cruiser defense went to work right away stopping the Hurricane offense at every turn. A fourth down interception and run back by Eatonville's Eric Rose stopped Olympia. Rose ran the interception back for what looked like a 53 yard touchdown return. A holding call during the runback brought the ball back to the 47 yard line. Three plays later Rose would cap Eatonville's first drive with a touchdown from the eight yard line. Jeremy Leonard added the extra point run. The Junior Cruisers would hold the Hurricanes scoreless with negative yardage for the rest of the half. The Junior Cruisers went on to score three more times. Aaron Edwards' four yard plunge capped a 31 yard drive. Luke Wellfringer added the extra point with a pass from JD Olson. Taking control of the ball on the 50 Rose ended a four play drive with a nine yard touchdown. Olson added the extra point run. On the next Eatonville possession Olson rambled 22 yards ending a 32 yard three play drive. Joey Patterson caught the extra point pass from Olson.

The Lacy Crusaders were the Junior Cruisers opponent. On the first Eatonville possession Rose swept the right end 26 yards to put Eatonville on the board first. The PAT pass was incomplete. Lacy caught a break when the Junior Cruisers fumbled on the 21 yard line. The Crusaders put together a six play drive to tie the game. The extra point run was good giving the Crusaders a 7-6 lead. On the following kick off Eric Rose found the wall and ran 70 yards scoring the go ahead touch down. Jeremy Leonard added the extra point run. The Junior Cruiser defense held off the final Crusader assault.

The Junior Cruisers will have two weeks to prepare for the season opener September 7, at Lakewood's Harry Lang Stadium against the Lakewood Lumberjack Gold team. The game starts at 10 a.m.

The EYSA Art Festival tournament results are in. Eatonville entered two teams in the 10 and under tournament held August 3rd and 4th . Eatonville Cruisers #1 team was coached by Jim Jumper. Eatonville Cruisers #2 team was coached by Mark Swartout. Both Eatonville teams played well in the tourney with EC #2 advancing to the Championship game against the Puyallup Reds.

Unfortunately just before the Championship game was about to be played the weather took a turn and the rain began to pour. It soon became evident that the game could not be played and both teams were announced Co-Tournament Champions each taking home first place honors. Both Eatonville teams were congratulated on the fine sportsmanship.
In the 12 and under tournament held August 10th and 11th, Eatonville took 4th place. The team coached by John Edwards found them selves in an extra inning game with Orting. With the bases loaded Eatonville's Lane Gillman smacked a walk off grand slam to win the game.
The 14 and under Eatonville All-Stars coached by Darold Holden took home first place defeating the Lineup sponsored team. The All-Stars played a total of four games on Saturday displaying a great amount of focus and determination.
The second Eatonville team in the tourney coached by Neil Kerr played well but did not make the finals. Once again all the Eatonville teams were congratulated on their sportsmanship.

EHS gets new coach
--by Donny O'Brien
Eatonville High School finally has a new head basketball coach. After nearly ten months, the school board voted on July 24th to hire Clifford Harris. Harris worked at Wilson High School in Tacoma last year as a math teacher and assistant varsity and JV basketball coach. Harris, who is in his early fifties, was also hired as a math teacher at EHS. Following a hitch in the military, Harris worked as a carpenter until he began his second career as an educator about 15 years ago. Harris will replace interim basketball coach Mark Swartout. Swartout, who took over the team two weeks into last year's season, guided the team to the first round of the Washington State AA finals.

Following a successful skills camp the Junior Cruisers Football team began practice Monday, July 29th. With a first day turnout of 25 players the coaching staff looks forward to a solid season . Several players from last years 4th and 5th grade squad and a few players who played up on the 6th grade squad will make up the core of this years team. Captains and third year veterans JD Olson at quarterback and Curtis Stivens at wide receiver will provide the team with solid leadership.
The team will be working hard for the next few weeks in preparation for the League Jamboree to be played on August 24, at Mann Middle School in Lakewood. After the jamboree the team and the coaching staff will have two weeks to fine tune before their first league game on September 7th.
This will be the Junior Cruisers first year as an independent team playing in the newly formed Lakewood/North Thurston County League. Weight, age and grade limits were major factors in the teams move to a new league. With no weight restrictions again this year at "skilled" positions in the Pierce County Boys Club League, the Junior Cruiser coaching staff felt the move would give the boys a more positive experience.
There is still time to join the team for those who are interested. Practices are Mondays Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at the Eatonville Mount Rainier Aerie Eagles Field. For more information contact Donny O'Brien at 253-875-8902.
