Cruisers Last Minute Score Beats Redskins

By Donny O'Brien

Eatonville's Devin O'Rourke broke the goal line with 47 seconds left to play for the go ahead winning touchdown in the Cruisers most challenging game of the season. O'Rourke carried the ball 31 times for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the 35-29 victory last Friday night.
The Cruisers had not beaten Pt. Townsend in their two previous meetings. Both those games were decided by just a few points. As these two Nisqually league rivals prepared for battle you could feel the electricity in the air. The Cruisers worked a balanced attack throughout the game moving the ball well on the ground. Kyle Mettler passed for three touchdowns using no less than five receivers to get the job done.
The Cruisers came out hot scoring on their first possession. Eatonville capped the drive when Mettler hit David Hamilton with a 21 yard strike. Hamilton's PAT kick was good. Hamilton would go five for five on the night in PAT kicks. The Redskins answered with a 46 yard run and PAT kick to tie the score. Eatonville retaliated moving the ball well on the ground with O'Rourke finishing their second drive with an 11 yarder. Early in the third quarter the Cruisers hit pay dirt again. Mettler tossed a 20 yard touchdown to Loren Bildt. Pt. Townsend moved the ball well on the ground using their elusive double wing offense to break a 56 yard run for a score and two point conversion ending their first half scoring. The Cruisers were not yet through in the first half though and moved the ball to the 11 yard line. Mettler hit Joe Rebic over the middle to give the Cruisers a 28-15, half time lead.
The third quarter was scoreless as both teams moved the ball back and forth with neither team able to sustain a drive into the end-zone. In the fourth quarter the Redskins came alive using their misdirection ground game to keep the ball moving. Scoring on their next two possessions Pt. Townsend took a 28-29 lead with 2:22 left to play. The Cruisers used the clock and executed a near perfect 55 yard drive in which O'Rourke blasted in from the four to take the lead with 47 seconds remaining. The Redskins had a little more than 30 seconds to mount an attack after the kickoff and run back. The Cruisers in prevent defense kept the Redskins at bay until the final tick of the clock.
With the win the Cruisers join Orting and Steilacoom as the only undefeated 3-0 teams atop the Nisqually league. Eatonville will face their biggest challenge of the season when they travel to Steilacoom Friday night to meet the Sentinels. Kickoff is at 7p.m..

The Junior Cruisers played the toughest day of their schedule last Saturday against the Lakewood Lumberjacks and the NorWest Rams. The Junior Cruisers (pumped up from a visit and pep talk by several EHS football players at Friday's practice) played eight hard quarters of football. Up first were the Rams. The last time these teams played the Junior Cruisers won in overtime. Once again, both teams went back and forth throughout a scoreless first half. The Junior Cruisers moved the ball into the red zone four times in the game. But, were only able to capitalize once in the third quarter when Eric Rose broke free around the left end. The PAT pass was no good. The Junior Cruiser defense held fast including a final minute goal line stand in the forth quarter that ended with an Aaron Edwards interception. Eatonville won this one 6-0 in regulation time.
The Cruisers then faced the Lumberjacks. Three weeks ago when these two teams met Lakewood was the victor in a 20-6 win. This game would go scoreless until the last 30 seconds of the forth quarter. It was then that the Junior Cruisers had their first defensive break down of the day. Lakewood's quarterback scrambled 29 yards for the winning score. The PAT attempt failed. With less than twenty seconds to play Joey Patterson took the Lumberjack kick off and ran it back to the 30 yard line. A late hit on the play gave the Junior Cruisers the ball on the Lumberjack 15 yard line. Eatonville got off just one play before time ran out. Having notable defensive games for the Junior Cruisers were Jeremy Leonard, Robbie Phibbs, Garret Brady, JD Olson, Eric West, Brad Norman, Steven Hass, Rose and Edwards.
The Missing from the teams line up for the first time in three years was team captain and starting wideout and cornerback Curtis Stivens. Stivens' Grandma Alice passed away last week. " Something as tragic as this is hard on the whole family. I feel for the little guy," said Junior Cruisers coach Donny O'Brien.  "I know what he and his family are going through."
Stivens will be back in the lineup on the 5th of Oct. when the Junior Cruisers face the Orting Animals at Lakes High School. Game starts at 1:30p.m.

5-0-1 Cruisers Girls soccer off to BEST Start Ever!

A 1-0 win over the Steilacoom Sentinels Tuesday and a 3-2 win at Vashon Thursday has the Cruisers undefeated in league play. In a match Tuesday where EHS finished the match out shooting Steilacoom 20-0, the Cruisers proved they are becoming the real deal. Starting the season with 5 wins and 1 tie, this season looks to hold a lot of promise for a team that is working and playing hard. Jenny Baker scored off an Anna Benton shot in the sixty-first minute to put the Cruisers on the board. She got a second goal fifteen minutes later but it was disallowed due to a shove in the penalty area.

A road trip to Vashon Thursday set the stage for the two dominant teams in the Nisqually League to meet head to head. Playing their toughest opponent of the season the Cruisers gave up two goals in the first five minutes of the match. After a quick gut check the Cruisers composed themselves and battled back to tie the match in the 37 minute when Baker ripped the net for her second goal of the evening. Megan Hecht netted the winner in the 63rd minute. Katelyn Goetze earned all three assists in the match for the Cruisers. The Girls face the Chimacum Cowboys this Tuesday at home at 3:30p.m. Thursday's match will be held at Klahowya.

Ellis/Kerr Undefeated In League Doubles Matches

The EHS Boys Tennis team is 4-2 thus far in the season. With decisive 4-1 wins over Foster, Chimacum, Klahowya, and North Mason the Cruisers are working towards a battle for third place over all in the Nisqually League. The teams two losses were to Sequim 1-4 and a close match with Steilacoom. The Cruisers face a tough Vashon squad this Tuesday. EHS coach Jeff Ames said."They get more players out for tennis than they do football and have the #2 singles player in the state."
Ames had words of praise for members of his team as well when he said." From the league tournament we expect to advance some very strong doubles teams on to the district tournament. We have five players with experience who are playing very well. Chris Baker, Chris Roof, and James Crosetti have been playing singles. Peter Ellis and Scott Kerr are undefeated at first doubles. We have several freshmen who are showing some great potential. Jonathan Dehnert and Andrew Heinz have played some varsity and Sean Fountain is a strong Freshman prospect too especially at the net."
The Cruisers are hoping to upset the league leading Pirates in Tuesday's match.
