October 11, 2007 - by Dixie A. Walter: Mike Schaub has announced he is running as a write-in candidate for the position of town treasurer. Until Schaub stepped up to the plate there was only one candidate, Meridith (Weilert) Wright. Wright is currently a member of the Eatonville town council. She was unopposed in that race.
       Schaub's qualifications are impressive. He is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration -  Accounting/Finance with eight years experience in government operations - Department of Revenue. His resume includes: working with taxpayers; understanding tax structures; understands accounting of state taxes; over five years accounting experience - Department of Revenue and Office of Financial Management;
knowledge of state accounting policies and experience working with the state auditor annual report. For his complete resume please see Mike Schaub Resume
Schaub currently works at the Office of Financial Management in Olympia, as a financial consultant in the
Statewide Accounting section. He said,  "We are responsible for preparing the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the State, set and maintain statewide accounting policies, review financial data of state agencies for accuracy, appropriateness and conformity with state statute and national standards for accounting and financial reporting and financial consulting services for state agencies." And jokes, "I know it's a mouthful."
Schaub is a third generation graduate of Eatonville High School (EHS), class of 1986. He and his wife, Shari, have two kids. Josh is 18 and graduated from EHS last year. Kristin, 16 is a sophomore at EHS this year. While in high school Schaub played football and basketball four years and started in both sports his final three years.
He is a lifetime resident of Eatonville, coached Eatonville girls AAU basketball team and is s Community Projects Volunteer.
It is rare for Eatonville to have a write-in candidate and Schaub intends to campaign as if his name were on the ballot. If you wish to contact Mike Schaub his eddress is mikes@mashell.com and he is listed in the Eatonville phone book.

Wright's council term was for two years and will be over January 1, 2008.

  My View:

Finally Some Light at the End of the Tunnel
If Voters Want a Qualified Person to Handle Their Money...

I have not been reticent about my feeling regarding Meridith (Weilert) Wright's run for town treasurer. In June I wrote an opinion piece about the entire issue after present treasurer Melode Akervick chose not to run again. You may read the whole story here Town Treasurer Position
In a nutshell - Wright as a councilmember voted, twice, to keep the treasurer's position separate from the town clerk's position. No one had filed for the office by the auditor's deadline. During a three-day period the auditor opened the position for filing again.
Wright, during this time, once more voted to keep the salaried position (around $600) in the present form. Within about twenty-four hours Wright filed for the office. And, until yesterday, was, once more, running unopposed.
Personally, I believe Mayor Tom Smallwood, who by many accounts knew Wright wanted the job, should have gone on record asking her to recuse herself from the vote. But that didn't happen.
The recent state audit reports showed how badly the administration, and council, have mismanaged town funds. Millions of dollars in reserves are gone, and it will take an extraordinary amount of time to build those funds up again.
After the audit reports were made public and during a council meeting, when this vitally important issue was being discussed, the mayor said he wanted to get the treasurer "more involved." At that time the treasurer was definitely going to be Wright, or so we all thought.
At this point everyone knows about the pathetic condition of the town's finances, and everyone should take the treasurer's race exceptionally seriously.
Look at the financial issues, look at the candidate's qualifications and experience. Then make your choice. Thanks to Mike Schaub, you now have a choice where you didn't two days ago.
It's not difficult to write-in a name on the ballot the election board even supplies pens.
