Skateboard Park Finally a Reality for Local Kids...

The curvature of the bowl provides skateboarders with many possible moves and directions to take as they rocket back and forth. Here, Curtis Parton has just made another turn, and heads downward on two wheels toward the central spoke of the bowl.
Saturday, December 4 was the magic day for skateboarders. The long-awaited skateboard facility was finally open for action and the kids wasted no time hitting the ramps, steps, rails and bowl - sometimes quite hard - but their previous practice, at other parks and elsewhere around town, was very evident. These are no novices; many of these young athletes display an array of precision jumps and turns that dazzle the uninitiated.

Practice makes perfect

Jeremy Leonard, who just before this picture was taken had suffered a nasty spill at the end of a previous jump, appears to defy gravity in this move at the top of a ramp.

Balance, Grace, Precision

Bryan Krasovetz flies up a ramp toward the viewer and temporarily parts company with his skateboard, sending it into a 360-degree spiral before making a perfect landing back on the board. The skateboard lying on its side has been placed there as a hurdle for the boarders to clear as they launch over the top of the ramp.
Local kids wasted no time taking advantage of the new ramps, coming out early Saturday to test and hone their skills.

Alder Street Family Park-Skateboard Facility

     February 14, 2003

The "skateboard park" committee met February 11 for the first time in months. Committee members decided to "break ground" figuratively speaking, and move on with the business of getting the skateboard portion of the park under way as soon as possible.
It was decided to investigate various ways of obtaining the services of design engineers for the "facility." The committee hopes to have the skateboard part of the park done by August.  Committee members attending the short meeting were: Bruce Lachney, Nancy Ellis, Bob Schaub, Dixie Walter, council member Ray Harper and Jamieson Van Eaton, public works director.
Below is a graphic of the area and a cost prospectus of three phases of expanding the town park systems. Neither are "carved in stone" and are subject to change. Note that the Alder St. Park is near the old mill pond,  Mashell River,  there is a wetlands on the site and at least part of the site is on the Eatonville aquifer recharge area. Van Eaton stated the town would have to fill out a SEPA (State Environmental Protection Act) checklist as the locale is so close to the different water areas.
