Seek Truth Without Fear

"There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else."

They Will Remember,
Time Capsule
for 2109

Exploring the Past: We have spent the last year reconnecting with Eatonville’s rich history.

Enjoying the Now: We have just finished doing that with the 100th birthday celebration.

Envisioning the Future:  Let’s just imagine what the people in the year 2109 will be thinking as they get ready for Eatonville’s two hundredth birthday celebration.

They will have tons of material concerning the early days of our town. Of course, there will be newspaper articles and family histories that will be available from the archives. But what of it right now, the year 2009, the time we are living in? They will be curious about this time. After all, it will be 100 years in the past! They will want to know about this town, its present day citizens, its schools, its politics and its character and personality today. We can pass on that information down through the ages. We can Envision the Future by sending letters through the corridors of time. We can Enjoy the Now by writing to those people in the distant future and helping to make their Bicentennial of Eatonville an “historic” occasion.

What to write about? Topics that at this time might seem mundane to you will be of interest to those in the future. You can write about family. If you went to the schools here you can write about being a kid living in town or out on a farm. Such simple things as to what your favorite holiday was or the food that you buy and the dinners you prepare. Talk about your job and the organizations that you belong to. Perhaps you would like to write about the beauty of the area, its rivers, lakes and hills, its evergreens, its leafy trees and abundance of flowers, and how the seasons change everything growing and blooming.
Anything and everything about your life here, life in America, whether right now or 20 years ago will be of interest. If you could interview someone in Eatonville 100 years ago, what questions would you ask them concerning the life and times of the year 1909? Let that be your guide. Have fun with it and let your voice reach across the century.
Join in the fun and write a message to go in a Time Capsule to be buried next to the Van Eaton Cabin in Mill Pond Park. The stainless steel time capsule when sealed will be watertight and able to withstand large temperature fluctuations. If each one of us pays $10 for an envelope addressed To the Future, the Time Capsule will pay for itself. For the ten dollars you will receive a letter-sized sheet (8.5”x11”) with an envelope. You can write on both sides on this specially treated archival paper. Dead line January 31, 2010.
Pick up your envelope at the Holly Hut, 129 Washington Avenue,  Eatonville, Washington (Nancy Iams 360.832.4747) or contact Bob Walter, president of the South Pierce County Historical Society at 253.988.0904.
